Each garment serves as an entry point into powerful historical narratives connected through audio storytelling, visual imagery, and interactive QR technology.
More than a clothing brand, Open Book is a living legacy — where history is not simply read, but experienced.
Through every chapter, visitors are invited to explore stories of courage, innovation, sacrifice, resilience, and transformation that have too often remained overlooked or untold.

Every story has a beginning. Volume 1 opens in Virginia—where history runs deep, and the roots of a nation are grounded in stories that have too often been overlooked, hidden, or forgotten. From the Emancipation Oak, a living symbol of education and freedom, to the courage of the 6888th Postal Battalion… from the brilliance behind space exploration to the scientific legacy that continues to shape modern medicine and technology— These are the connections that bind the past to the present.
Through powerful visuals, narration, and design, The Virginia Connection is not just something you read—it’s something you experience. This is where the journey begins. This is where history starts to speak.

Beneath the branches of the Emancipation Oak, history did not just unfold—it transformed. Located in Virginia, this living landmark became a place of gathering, learning, and awakening at a time when education was newly within reach for those who had long been denied it. Here, formerly enslaved men and women came together—not just to listen, but to grow, to question, and to claim knowledge as their own. The roots of the Emancipation Oak run deep—much like the legacy it represents. They stretch through time, grounding generations in the pursuit of education, empowerment, and possibility. When the world was at war, they answered the call—serving a country that did not always serve them. The 6888th Postal Battalion, known as the “Six Triple Eight,” was the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Stationed in Europe, they were given a mission others had failed to complete: clear a massive backlog of undelivered mail that had left millions of soldiers disconnected from home. Working in cold, dimly lit warehouses, surrounded by mountains of letters and packages, they brought order to chaos—restoring a vital lifeline between the front lines and loved ones across the ocean. ...
But their impact reached far beyond mail. They delivered connection. They restored morale. They proved, through discipline and determination, that excellence would not be denied—even in the face of segregation and limited recognition. For many, their story remained overlooked for decades. Yet their legacy endures—carried in every message delivered, every barrier broken, and every path they helped open for those who would follow.

Before rockets could reach the stars, calculations had to be exact—and behind those numbers were minds too brilliant to be ignored, yet too often unseen. At a time when both race and gender placed limits on opportunity, a group of African American women mathematicians worked behind the scenes to solve the equations that would launch the United States into space.
